We recently hosted our Brilliant Basics Workshop in Dartford, and what an energising day it was! Filled with insightful discussions, LEGO® Serious Play®, creative exercises, and plenty of Ric and Emma Presenting the LEGO® Serious Play® exerciseshands-on learning, the day was all about exploring how we can build high-performing teams. A standout moment of the event was our use of LEGO® Serious Play® (LSP), an innovative and engaging exercise that brings team-building concepts to life in a whole new way.

Emma and Ric: Our Dynamic Facilitators

Our facilitators, Emma Church and Ric Hayden, did a fantastic job leading the day. Both Emma and Ric brought their own dynamic energy to the workshop, keeping the sessions fun, engaging, and interactive. Their enthusiasm made complex concepts approachable and kept everyone involved in the learning process. From energetic group discussions to hands-on activities, they ensured that each delegate walked away with valuable takeaways.

Introducing LEGO® Serious Play®: A New Way to Build Teams

After warming up with Insights, we dove straight into LEGO® Serious Play® (LSP). For those unfamiliar, LEGO® Serious Play® is a facilitated meeting and problem-solving method that uses LEGO bricks to represent thoughts, ideas, and solutions. By building models with the bricks, participants externalise abstract concepts and make them tangible. This hands-on approach creates a space where everyone can contribute and think creatively.

The beauty of LSP is in its simplicity and its ability to engage everyone, regardless of their role or personality. It encourages participants to visualise ideas and collaborate.

Fun and Interactive: Quick-Fire LEGO® Challenges

Throughout the day, we took part in several quick-fire rounds using LEGO bricks to tackle team-building challenges. One of the first exercises was about creating a model that represented the “ideal team.” Each group built their version of what an ideal team looked like, and then shared their models with the group. It was amazing to see how each team interpreted the same concept in different ways—some focused on communication, others on diversity, and some on leadership and trust.

Why LEGO® Serious Play® Works

What makes LEGO® Serious Play® so effective is its ability to break down communication barriers. By building models, participants can better understand each other’s perspectives. It encourages creativity, fosters collaboration, and helps visualise solutions to challenges. Plus, it’s a fun and engaging activity, which helps keep energy levels high and creates a relaxed environment for problem-solving.

As the day progressed, we saw how LEGO® Serious Play® brought out a wide range of ideas and solutions that were grounded in both individual and team perspectives. It created space for everyone to contribute, ensuring that each person’s voice was heard and valued.

Wrapping Up the Day

As the workshop drew to a close, delegates left with not only new tools and insights but a stronger sense of team cohesion and a clearer understanding of how to build high-performing teams. The LEGO models created throughout the day acted as lasting reminders of the lessons learned—how to communicate better, collaborate effectively, and approach problems with creativity.

At Learning Cog, we believe that tools like LEGO® Serious Play® are invaluable in helping teams unveil their potential. Whether you’re looking to improve communication, foster creativity, or build stronger relationships, LSP is a fun and effective way to get results.
